The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has commenced the announcement of the 2017 Hajj fares with a call on relevant bodies to speed up the process of collecting and remitting same to the commission.
The announcement was made at the ongoing state Muslim Pilgrims’ Welfare boards, agencies and commissions meeting at NAHCON headquarters in Abuja.
At the time of going to press, six states of Nasarawa, Niger, Kaduna, Kano, Adamawa and Yobe had announced their hajj fares to be paid by pilgrims.
While Nasarawa pilgrims are to pay N1,544,894.16 for this year’s hajj, Niger pilgrims are expected to pay N1,525,483.30, Kaduna, N1,535,503.68, Kano, N1,537,859.97, Adamawa, N1,530,101.08 and Yobe, N1,520,101.18, respectively.
The packages include $800 general Basic Travel Allowance (BTA).
An official of the commission however said the packages exclude hadaya (sacrificial ram) fees which has been fixed at N38,000 for this year’s exercise.
The boards are expected to collect the sums and remit same to Jaiz Bank Plc, which is the appointed bank for the collection of the money.
Unlike the practice of uniform fares of the past, the commission’s ongoing reform announced by the Chairman of the commission Abdullahi Mukhtar Mohammed, shows that each of the 36 states of the federation has different fares based on the services to be rendered to pilgrims and local distance millage among other considerations.

Clashes have broken out between Italian riot police and protesters as hundreds of people marched against the policies of the leading industrial powers on the Italian island of Sicily near the venue of the Group of Seven (G7) summit.
Police fired tear gas at red-clad protesters in the seaside town of Giardini Naxos on Saturday.
Eyewitnesses said many activists could not make it to the protest in Giardini Naxos due to heavy security in the area.
Police reportedly stopped buses and cars multiple times at a main highway leading to Giardini Naxos and searched them for several minutes.
Bus loads of police lined the route of the march while a police helicopter hovered above.
According to the coordinator of Sicily's communist party, Alessandro D'Alessandro, there had been a media campaign of fear against the protesters, which kept the number of protesters lower than expected.
"It was hard to get here… but we came to tell the world's most powerful people that we oppose their military and capitalistic worldview. We are here to defend the interests of the weakest,” D'Alessandro said.
The mayor of Giardini Naxos ordered all local businesses to close Saturday over fears of recurrence of violent protests similar to the ones during a G7 summit in the northern Italian city of Genoa in 2001

EU officials have described the current two-day summit, attended by the heads of state of the US, Italy, France, Britain, Germany, Canada and Japan, as the most challenging meeting of the G7 in years.
The gathering on the island of Sicily kicked off on Friday, with world leaders engaged in a heated argument with US President Donald Trump, who is considering withdrawing from the landmark Paris climate accord.

A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Adamawa State, Adamu Kamale, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
With this development, APC members are inching towards doubling those of the PDP as a result of gradual but consistent defections to the ruling party by opposition legislators.
Kamale announced his defection in a letter read at yesterday’s plenary.
His defection has further reduced the number of PDP lawmakers to around 122, while APC has increased to about 231.
He said he ditched the PDP due to the continued leadership crisis in the party, and assured that his decision to join the APC was taken after receiving the go ahead from his constituents in Adamawa.
Kamale’s action was challenged by the Minority Whip, Yakubu Barde (PDP, Kaduna), who cited Section 68 (g) of the Nigerian Constitution, which he said provided that any lawmaker who left a political party under which platform he was elected, without any division in the party, shall vacate his seat.
But his argument could not stand as Speaker Yakubu Dogara ruled that: “The constitution does not tell us what faction is about. The issue of faction (division) can only be determined by the court, so we should allow the court to determine that.”

Represented by the Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, the minister said there was a significant increase in Export Sales Revenue by about $63.69 million due to increase in the average unit price of crude from $55.86 to $55.38 per barrel and a rise in crude oil export volume by 1.07 million barrels.
She said the Federal Government received N136.633 billion; state governments got N103.842 billion, while the local governments received N77.112 billion including the Value Added Tax (VAT).

Kebbi State House of Assembly has instructed the police to arrest former governor Usman Saidu Dakingari for his failure to appear before a House committee over alleged contract fraud.
The order was issued yesterday after the former governor failed to honour several invitations to appear before the panel.
The House last week gave the former governor up to yesterday to appear before it but when he failed to do so it decided to issue a subpoena.
He was required to appear for questioning regarding his role in the award of the state airport multi-billion naira airport contract.
The N18 billion airport contract was awarded by Dakingari’s government but the legislators are now investigating a report that the contract had been inflated by N6.4 billion.
During yesterday’s sitting, the Speaker, Alhaji Samaila Abdulmumini Kamba informed members that the Clerk of the House had confirmed to him that Dakingari did not appear as expected.
Following this, a member from Bunza constituency, Aminu Muhammed Bunza raised a motion for his arrest to compel him to appear before the house.
He said: “We have given him all the available opportunity to appear before us. We had invited him on two occasions but he didn’t honour our invitation. For this we should issue arrest warrant on him.”
His motion was seconded by the Deputy Speaker, Muhammadu Buhari Alieru and, thereafter, passed unanimously.
The Speaker said: “We have decided to issue arrest warrant on the former governor through the Commissioner of Police.”
While speaking to journalists, the deputy speaker, Alieru said their decision was not politically motivated. He said the House had also written to the companies involved in the airport contracts and was still awaiting their responses.
When contacted a former Special Adviser to Dakingari, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Argungu told our correspondent that they were already studying the resolution of the state house of assembly on the former governor and would soon respond to it. “Dakingari has not been served and we are also yet to be served but we are still studying the situation very soon we will respond appropriately to their resolution,” he said.

How Universities will Conduct Admission this Year. After the recent scrapping of post utme exam by the federal government, you might be wondering how the universities will conduct admission this year.

Going by the reactions of candidates over the withdrawal of the list of candidates sent to tertiary institutions for admission consideration by JAMB, it is important we clarify a few things to avoid confusion and ensure candidates are properly guided.

So here are important things you should know and keep in mind concerning this new development;
1. The University senate now has autonomy to select candidates for admission. However the list of selected candidates must pass through JAMB for approval and issuance of admission letters.

2. Whether or not you were posted to a school or not for admission consideration earlier no longer matters. As the posting is no longer valid. All you need to do now is wait for your school of choice to announce its screening exercise and ensure you participate accordingly.
3. For Tertiary institutions that have already conducted their admission screening exercise in line with JAMB stipulations, such screening still remains valid. Candidates that participated in such screening should wait for the release of the admission list(s) by their respective institutions.
4. The withdrawal of the JAMB Consideration List does not mean that post-UTME is now valid. The ban on Post-UTME remains valid. Tertiary institutions must abide to the screening modalities as earlier announced by JAMB.
5. Candidates should note that the offer of provisional admission by their schools of choice is subject to validation by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The Joint Admission And Matriculation Board held a meeting at the B.O Ukeje Auditorium, Nation Commission for colleges of Education, Central Business District Abuja on Tuesday 28th, 29th and 30th to map out admission screening modalities for Colleges of education, polytechnics and Universities.
The meeting was chaired by the permanent secretary ministry of education, Dr. Shade Yemi-Esan.
After evaluating the screening models of some schools in previous years and other factors surrounding the admission processes in tertiary institution in the country, JAMB released a proposed model for the screening of recommended candidates.
PROPOSED JAMB MODEL FOR SCREENING OF RECOMMENDED CANDIDATES
1. Screening of candidates shall be for ONLY candidates recommended for admissions.
2. No written examination to be conducted.
3. Verification of Course Requirements (O’ levels or A’ levels).
4. Verification of valid JAMB results by checking:
i. Online Result Slip
ii. Printout
iii. Photo Album
v. Checklist
vi. Biometrics
